Regarded as one of North Carolina’s elite criminal defense attorneys James has enjoyed a successful practice focusing on complex criminal litigation and elite athlete representation. James has been one of North Carolina’s busiest trial lawyers over the past 5 years.  He has tried over 50 cases to jury during that period of time, earning a number of dismissals and acquittals in numerous state courts and multiple federal districts.  James appears regularly in courts throughout the southeast and has developed the reputation as a fierce litigator.   James has also gained the distinction of being one of the best trial lawyers in the south. Recently, James was certified by the North Carolina State Bar as a Board Certified Specialist in State and Federal Criminal Law.

Prior to entering the practice of law, James was a standout Atlantic Coast Conference student-athlete at Wake Forest University.  During his tenure at WFU, James was a 4-year letter winner and two year starter for the Demon Deacons’ linebacking corps.  In 1995 he was honored as the most outstanding lineman/linebacker by receiving the Bill George Award.  While maintaining a close connection to college and professional sports, James was certified by the NFLPA as a contract advisor in 2003. James has successfully negotiated NFL contracts with the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and the Tennessee Titans.  James’ reputation in the sports world has lead to his involvement representing student and professional athletes in matters ranging from NCAA investigations to NFL workers’ compensation actions.  He has consistently been called upon by sports officials in the state to speak to young athletes about their academic and athletic futures.

Stacey Rubain is a seasoned trial lawyer and brings a wealth of diverse experiences and broad legal knowledge to Quander Rubain.  She prides herself on being a trial lawyer, a lawyer actually willing to go to battle for her client in a courtroom, and she highly regards the dignity that accompanies that title.  Stacey regularly represents clients in North Carolina state courts, the United States District Courts in the Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina, and the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.  Regardless of the type of case or the client, from a RICO conspiracy to a pro bono child custody case, Stacey always remembers the importance of every case to the client.

What matters most to Stacey is making a difference in her clients’ lives, and in the lives of those important to her clients.  Stacey understands that her clients are seeking her help at some of the most difficult times of their lives.  She invests deeply in her clients and their cases, and wants to have a positive impact in the lives of her clients.  Stacey is humbled by the trust that her clients put in her and her abilities.

Stacey has been named a top criminal defense lawyer by North Carolina Super Lawyers.  She has also been certified as a Board Certified Specialist in State and Federal Criminal Law by the North Carolina State Bar.  Stacey also serves as a Trial Practice Adjunct Law Professor at Wake Forest School of Law.

Lauren A. Tuttle

Lauren was born in New York City and raised there until middle school.  During high school as the daughter of a corporate human resources director Lauren moved with her family to California, North Carolina, Vermont and the United States Virgin Islands.   Choosing a different path after High School, Lauren returned to California and explored careers in hospitality and banking.  Upon her return to North Carolina Lauren turned her attention to achieving her childhood dream to become an attorney.  While pursuing her undergraduate degree at Salem College Lauren and her husband welcomed their daughter Emma Kate.  Lauren continued on and received her Juris Doctor commuting to Charlotte while juggling a household and assisting her husband run their family-owned business.

Lauren is committed to service not only in her capacity as an attorney but also being of service in her community.  For many years she has been assisting underserved women in the community overcome personal adversity.  Lauren also supports her daughter’s school community.

Jessica Miller


Jessica is the newest member of the Quander Rubain team, joining the firm in 2015.  She is a 2004 graduate of Robert B. Glenn High School in Kernersville.  Jessica has spent her entire career working with and helping people – which made her a perfect fit for Quander Rubain.

Jessica plays one of the most essential roles at Quander Rubain, because she is the lifeline between the attorneys and our clients.  Jessica has a tremendous work ethic, but it is the compassion and thoughtfulness that she shows to our clients, that is her best attribute.   Jessica will go the extra mile to serve our clients and to make sure that they have all of the information that they need while their cases are pending. It is her special ability to connect with clients and to make sure that each client knows how important their case is to Quander Rubain that distinguishes Jessica. Helping clients is her passion and the one thing that Jessica enjoys most about working at Quander Rubain.  Jessica is also fluent in Spanish and is a notary public.

When not in the office, Jessica enjoys spending time with her Husband and two beautiful daughters.
